Atomic Furs was born out of the desires of several of us to have a local furry group in the Richland-Kennewick-Pasco, WA area and surrounding locations. For several weeks prior to the launch of Atomic Furs in October 2011, a Tri-Cities Furries group was established and held its first meet at a bowling alley in Kennewick. A total of about 12 furs attended, and some of the organizers and others present discussed how they could pool resources into helping the group develop as best as it could.
The first step identified was to create a high quality website that would attract local furries from all around the region. A local fur donated webspace and offered to administer the new site, and threw out the name of Atomic Furs. It seemed to stick, given the unique history of the area. At this point, the group is planning several subsequent meets, details of which will be posted on this site when available.
Why “Atomic Furs”? – This region of southeastern Washington state, where the group is concentrated, is home to the Hanford Nuclear Reservation, which was home to the world’s first full-scale plutonium producing reactor during World War II. Throughout it the Cold War, Hanford produced plutonium used in several nuclear bombs and contributed greatly to the scientific achievement of humankind during that era.
The name Atomic Furs represents our appreciation for our heritage and history, as well as illustrates the “glowing” pride we have in being furries.
If you are interested in joining, please do so using the automated Registration links on the site. We reccommend that you are located somewhere in eastern Washington or eastern Oregon as this group’s mission is to host and organize more live meetups rather than just provide a corner of the internet to chat, discuss, and meet new friends.
Have fun and welcome to Atomic Furs.
